Mihyun

Mihyun Kim is an assistant professor of Statistics within the School of Mathematical and Data Sciences at West Virginia University. Before joining WVU, Dr. Kim was a post-doctoral fellow in the department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, University of Waterloo under the supervision of Prof. Greg Rice. She received her doctoral degree from the Statistics department from Colorado State University in 2021, advised by Prof. Piotr Kokoszka.

Dr. Kim’s primary research focuses on the development of statistical methods for analyzing functional data and functional time series observed in extreme events. She advances methods combining functional data analysis and extreme value analysis to address challenges arising from data sparsity, complex dependence, and heavy-tailed behavior. Her research is mainly motivated by applications in finance, health sciences, and environmental science, where understanding the impacts of rare but severe events is crucial for risk assessment and decision-making.
